About the South Hams Vintage Rally
Locked within a southern peninsula in beautiful South Devon, between the River Avon and Kingsbridge, sits Sorley Cross, home to the South Hams Annual Working Vintage Rally. The rally, held in mid-summer, is well established and draws exhibitors and visitors from near and far.
Each year, the Vintage Rally is held over two days and provides something for everybody. Whether you are a vintage fanatic, or just want something for the family, the South Hams event is one not to be missed.
The rally boasts an impressive showcase of historical exhibits, including farm tractors and equipment, vintage commercial vehicles, vintage cars and motorbikes, and stationary and miniature steam engines. In times gone by the rally has also included horse-drawn ploughs, traditional crafts, birds of prey, and lots of entertainment for the children.
South Hams Vintage Machinery Club
The Vintage Rally is run by South Hams Vintage Machinery Club, whose keen interest with the vintage world instigated the first rally in 1974 and has continued to improve with each passing year. The club is always looking for new volunteers, and if you’re interested in joining, visit their official website and send them a quick message. Each year the club donates the proceeds of the event to charity.
Entry To The Rally
The Rally is open each day from 10.00am in the morning and has a full day of activities. Entry to the rally is £9 for adults, £3 for children aged between 5 and 16, and under 5s go for free. Exhibitors and traders should contact the rally organisers through the official website.
Somewhere to Stay in Devon
There are a few hotels and bed and breakfasts near the rally. The closest is the Spread Eagles Bed-and-Breakfast, which has an excellent reputation, but you will need to book well in advance to secure your accommodation. There are a multitude of other locations to stay all dotted around the rally location, and all within easy driving distance. If the weather holds off and you’re feeling adventurous enough to camp Parkland Caravan, and Camping Site in Sorley Green Cross is a great choice if you want to stay close to the rally.
Getting To Sorley Cross
If travelling by car use the Devon Expressway (A38) which runs between Exeter and Plymouth and exit south towards Brownston, Loddiswell, and Churchstow. Find the B3194 and look out for the rally signposts.
Other Things To Do Around The Area
Apart from exploring the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, check out Bantham Beach a few miles to the southwest. Travel a little bit further east to the Woodlands family theme park which offers children’s play activities and a falconry centre, or head into Dartmouth and visit the Dartmouth Museum, Bayard’s Cove Fort and Dartmouth Castle overlooking the estuary.
The South Hams Vintage Rally is the main event in the machinery club’s annual calendar, but they do run the events throughout the year. See their website for more details.
