About the Capel Military Vehicle Show
Aldhurst Farm on Temple Lane in Dorking lies off the A24 about halfway between London to the north and Worthing on the south coast. Daniel Defoe, the author of Robinson Crusoe and actor Laurence Olivier, were born in Dorking. For one summer weekend each year, Aldhurst Farm plays host to the Capel Military vehicle Show, the area’s best annual military show for the whole family.
The show is a display of some of the most important military vehicles from previous century wars to the present era.
The Capel Military vehicle Show will be full of what the organisers call 'shiny stuff painted green', including over 300 tanks, helicopters, jeeps, trucks and a Boeing CH-47 Chinook, an American twin-engine, tandem-rotor, heavy-lift helicopter. More than just a line-up of vehicles the event will have battle re-enactments, Naval gun and cannon firings. Children will enjoy the inflatables, mini tanks, climbing walls, archery, laser quest and airsoft ranges. There will be lots of drinks and food, including ice cream, soft drinks for kids and a licensed bar for the grown-ups. And don’t forget some great Saturday night entertainment!
Capel Military Vehicle Show
Chairman John Dale had a goal to take his love of military vehicles and use them on his farm to raise funds for military-based charities. This year’s focused charity is Hounds for Heroes in honour of military animals that provide a service that no human could do.
Entry To The Event
Early birds can arrive by Saturday 9:00 a.m. when the gates open, but the entertainment goes well into the evening on Saturday night. The adult entrance fee is £9.00 or £15.00 for a two-day pass. OAPs, Children and Veterans enter for £5.00, a family with two adults and two children enter on a family pass at £25.00 and kids under age 5 are free to enter. Trade stand owners and exhibitors will need to submit an application before the event.
Somewhere to Stay in Surrey
For a mere £40.00, a family can camp at the farm on a weekend pass and enjoy both days of the show. Call the organisers for more details on Caravans and the campground capacity. Gatwick Airport is located about 10 miles east of the Farm meaning that there are plenty of hotels and B&Bs for those needing accommodations.
Getting To Aldhurst Farm
Coming from the north on the A24, drivers will exit at the Beare Green roundabout, taking the 1st exit onto Newdigate Road and heading east. The road will slowly curve right and become Thurbarns Hill and then veers right to Misbrooks Green Road. The final turn is a left onto Temple Road and to the Farm. From the south, drivers will exit at Clark’s Green roundabout onto Wolve’s Hill heading northeast. The road becomes The Street (yes, 'The' is the name of the street) and drivers will make a right turn at Vicarage Lane in Capel after passing the Crown Inn on the left. Vicarage Lane leads to Temple Road, where a right turn takes you to the destination.
Other Things To Do Around Capel
If you stay in Dorking for the weekend, take a break from the Capel show and visit the Dorking Museum. You will learn about the local history from medieval times to its involvement in both World Wars of the twentieth century. About 10 miles away is a town of about 30,000 people well known to folks who have soaked their feet in a solution of magnesium sulphate after a long day at a steam rally. If you haven’t already guessed, the town is Epsom, where Epsom salts were first processed. It is also the home of Epsom Downs, where Eliza Doolittle uttered her famous 'C’mon Dover, move your bloomin’ arse' much to the amusement of her mentor Henry Higgins in the movie version of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion titled My Fair Lady.
Parking is free, and dogs are welcome but remember that a military show will include loud noises that can spook an animal. And always remember that for better or worse, the use of military force has shaped the world that we live in. We honour the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice against an evil dictator, or an outlaw regime, and this show allows us to admire the old and new military vehicles that made those victories possible.
When is the next Capel Military Vehicle Show?
