About the Newark Vintage and Heritage Tractor Show

Newark-on-Trent or Newark is forever linked to the Countess of Mercia, who with her husband Leofric, Earl of Mercia, owned the land in the 11th century. The legend is that the Countess, better known as Lady Godiva, rode naked on a horse through the streets of Coventry to protest taxes that her husband imposed on their tenants. Later versions describe a man by the name of Tom who was struck blind as he watched her ride. The term “Peeping Tom” originated from the tale. Today Newark is better known for the Newark Vintage and Heritage Tractor Show that takes place in early November.

Exhibitionists posing as opponents of oppressive taxation, voyeurs, and royalty are all welcome at the Tractor Show held on a Saturday and Sunday at the County Showground on Lincoln Road near Winthorpe Village. Last year’s show featured over 1,100 exhibits and welcomed thousands of visitors.

The exhibits include hundreds of vintage tractors, commercial vehicles, military and stationary engines from the UK and Europe. Hobbyists will be able to find that missing part they need from the trade stands selling vintage parts and equipment. Visitors will not go hungry as there will be delicious food and drinks and activities for the whole family. Saturday is Auction day and Sunday is the “Sort out” for collectors and enthusiasts.

Other Things To Do Around Winthorpe

We can’t promise any long-haired naked ladies on horseback during your visit to Newark but there are many other activities to enjoy. The National Civil War Centre in the Newark Museum offers a glimpse of the 16th century battle between the Roundheads and the Cavaliers. If you prefer to explore more recent history the Newark Air Museum is another great place to spend a few hours.

A few more things to remember: Car parking, including disabled parking, is free. Dogs are allowed but keep them on a leash and on their best behaviour. Wi-Fi is available in certain areas. Baby changing stations and other disabled facilities are available in the Showground buildings. We are not responsible for your wife if she decides to disrobe and hop on a vintage tractor to create a new legend.
