About the South East Bus Festival
From Queenborough on the eastern coast of England to Maidstone, the A249 runs for a total distance of about 20 miles. But you will only need to travel about 14 miles to reach the Kent Showground where the South East Bus Festival will be held.
The South East Bus Festival is part of the more giant Transport Heritage Show. This year’s event will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the formation of London Country Bus Services and the 10th anniversary of the Festival itself.
Expect to see single deckers, double-deckers, and even a one-an-a-half decker coach for those who can’t decide. There will be lots of them as over 150 buses were on display in last year’s show. The Festival is not just for buses. As part of the Transport Heritage Show, there will be several hundred cars, commercials, tractors and motorbikes to appeal to those interested in all types of motor transports. Inside the exhibition hall will be models of vintage buses, guest speakers and slide shows that are sure to entertain as well as educate. You won’t go hungry or thirsty because Mrs. Hughes Tearoom, a vintage tearoom and the Tiger Lily Bar Bus plus several caterers, will provide all that you want including doughnuts and ice cream.
South East Bus Festival
The year 2011 was the first South East Bus Festival celebrating the one-hundredth year since the formation of the Maidstone and District Motor Services since renamed the Arriva Kent & Surrey Ltd company. The next Festival in 2012 marked the 60th anniversary of The M&D and East Kent Bus Club, established in 1952. In less than a decade, the Festival has become one of the largest bus exhibitions in the country.
Entry To The Event
This one-day event begins Saturday at 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., and while you can get your fill of free bus rides, there is a small admission charge of £12.00 for adults at the gate on the day of the Festival or £9.00 if prepurchased. Those 14 years of age and younger enter for free. If you are a participant with a vintage bus or coach on display, then you will receive four free admissions on arrival.
Somewhere to Stay in Kent
Some people will make the Saturday show a part of a more extended weekend and will need overnight accommodations. Maidstone, about 6 miles from the Festival, offers many options from a basic hotel to a lavish B&B. Caravaners or RVers will be okay at one of the nearby campsites but tent campers will need to keep watch of the weather forecast because it can get quite brisk in April.
Getting To Kent Showground
Drivers from the M20 will exit at junction 7 and head northeast on the A249. From the M2, drivers will exit at junction 5 and head southwest on the A249. Both routes lead to the Kent Showground. There is bus service from Maidstone near the M20 and Sittingbourne to the northeast. Keeping with the theme of the festival, a free vintage bus ride is offered from Ashford, about 20 miles to the southeast off the M20, but please check for the exact schedule. There are also shuttle buses at the showground to help you thoroughly explore the large venue.
Other Things To Do Around Nr Maidstone
People who attend shows like the South East Bus Festival usually like local attractions that are unusual and of historical significance. The town of Ashford offers all that with the Ashford Borough Museum, where visitors will learn about 19th-century smugglers known as the Aldington Gang plus artefacts and photographs from the forgotten prisoner of war camps in the borough and medical equipment from two former local hospitals. The museum’s open hours are quite limited so call ahead before you visit. Another place in Ashford to spend an hour or two bathed in history is St. Mary the Virgin Church, a splendid Grade I listed monument first completed at the end of the 13th century.
Parking is free to drivers. Dogs on leashes are welcomed to well-behaved owners. For more information, check with the Festival’s Facebook page or keep checking here for updates. Don’t just throw someone under any bus, invite them to the South East Bus Festival and throw them under a vintage bus!
