Isle of Wight Bus Museum

The Isle of Wight Bus & Coach Museum was established in 1997 and contains an impressive display of vintage buses and coaches, collected to display the Island’s transport heritage. The buses are housed in a former grain storage warehouse, on Newport Quay. They range from a 1889 tram car and a 1927 Daimler, to more recent vehicles. There are examples of vehicles under restoration, many items of memorabilia, and a vast collection of photographs reflecting the heyday of the Island as a holiday destination. The Bus Museum is run by an enthusiastic group of volunteers and new members are always welcome. We are a working museum with restored vehicles operating on special occasions such as bus rallies, carnival events and special operating days.

Worth a mention :: THE RYDE DEPOT APPEAL The Isle of Wight Bus and Coach Museum Ltd. hopes to purchasing the freehold land and buildings at Park Road, Ryde, Isle of Wight in order to house and display the Museum’s entire collection of buses and coaches which once ran on the Island. The building itself is of interest being one of only two former bus garages now surviving on the Island. Built in 1937-8 on Southern Railway land, it is typical of a bus garage of the Tilling era to the design of their architect H.J. Starkey. Many were built but so few now survive, following ownership changes in the bus industry. Whilst not strictly ‘Art Deco’ Ryde Depot is absolutely original in every respect and the Museum hopes to re-create a working bus garage of the 1960′s in this iconic building. The Museum needs to raise an amount of £150,000 in order to complete the purchase and if anyone would like to be involved in this exciting venture then any donation, no matter how large or small, would be gratefully received. It is envisaged that fund raising will take the form of outright donations, loans (with or without interest) and a share scheme. CONTACT BILL ACKROYD AT THE MUSEUM FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
